Methamphetamine

The governor recently signed legislation to combat the growing problem of meth production and abuse in New York. Meth is a highly addictive drug, produced cheaply using a variety of household products. Many of us here in Cayuga County are aware of how this scourge is growing in our region.

The new law creates three new felony offenses, ranging from Class D to Class B, for meth production, and it increases penalties for related offenses. The measure also increases penalties for individuals who carelessly dispose of dangerous meth ingredients.

My colleagues and I worked tirelessly for passage of this legislation to help our local authorities control the production and abuse of meth in Cayuga County and throughout New York.

Local Funds and Grants

So far this year, I have acquired more than $14,500 in funding for projects in the Cayuga County towns and villages within my district. I know how far this money goes for projects such as phone system upgrades, youth courts and highway infrastructure improvements.

I try my hardest to acquire funds for local projects because I know the municipalities are the most in need of state funding.

Suspending the State Gas Tax

Gas in New York is taxed at seven different intervals: four times by the federal government through a federal excise tax, a petroleum business tax, a petroleum testing fee and an oil spill fund fee; New York tacks on a 4 percent sales tax, localities add a 4 percent tax and there is an additional excise tax.

In early September, I introduced a bill that would suspend the state’s portion of the sales tax on gasoline and diesel, starting immediately and running through March 31, 2006. I acquired so many sponsors for this legislation after its introduction that I knew it was imperative to go a step further. So, I began a petition drive that calls on other state leaders to act on my legislation.
