Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli
Fighting for Central New York Jobs

“As a life-long resident of Central New York, I know firsthand it is a great place to live and raise a family – that’s why I decided to raise my family here. Now, as Assemblyman, I am working every day to make sure our region continues to offer the same opportunities to all of our children. I am fighting for good-paying jobs and economic prosperity so countless generations can proudly call Central New York their home too.”

Working to keep us working
Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli has a strong record of working to keep and create good-paying jobs for thousands of families in our region. Recently, the Assembly pledged $2 million to allow the Metropolitan Development Association of Central New York to implement a comprehensive plan aimed at creating jobs and revitalizing our economy.

Investing in our local economy

Assemblyman Magnarelli supports the Essential New York Initiative – a 12-county Central New York plan – which helps capitalize on our regional strengths: a strong university system, a first-rate work force, and emerging high-tech industries – by bringing them together to create jobs.

To help keep jobs in the state, Assemblyman Magnarelli sponsored legislation requiring entities receiving state economic development grants to first consider New York companies as primary suppliers (A.8408).

Magnarelli also helped secure $50,000 each in grants through the New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center for four upstate companies:

  • Air Innovations, Inc. of Syracuse
  • NuClimate Air Quality Systems, Inc. of East Syracuse
  • OrthoSystems, Inc. of Syracuse
  • Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. of Albany

These funds will create approximately 300 jobs in Central New York.

Encouraging innovation

As chair of the Task Force on University and Industry Cooperation, Assemblyman Magnarelli is helping capitalize on the educational resources available to Central New York’s workforce and businesses. As part of his economic development strategy, Magnarelli has invested in job-creating partnerships between local colleges and businesses, including:

  • $100,000 for the Syracuse University Renaissance Internship and Recruitment Program, which retains talented, educated students for the local economy
  • $240,000 for the daVinci program, which attracts high-tech workers to the area
  • $95,000 for Metropolitan Development Association Vision 2010 to review our information, bio- and electronic technology sectors

Magnarelli also sponsored legislation to create a grants program to stimulate research, applied technology and manufacturing in New York (A.10482), as well as legislation:

  • Establishing an annual patent fair to commercialize New York university patents for licensing (A.1957)
  • Creating a program to match federal grants awarded to New York universities for technology developments (A.7987)

Securing low-cost Power for Jobs

The successful Power for Jobs program has created and retained thousands of local jobs – including:

  • 3,088 jobs for St. Joseph’s Hospital
  • 3,696 jobs for Syracuse University

That’s why Assemblyman Magnarelli supported legislation extending the program until 2008 (A.11645), and has encouraged the Senate to join the Assembly in passing the extension.

Ensuring DestiNY USA creates and keeps jobs in Syracuse

Assemblyman Magnarelli introduced legislation requiring a state review to guarantee DestiNY USA creates 15,000 permanent, full-time jobs as well as 15,000 full-time construction jobs in return for state aid (A.11717).

Magnarelli’s bill will provide Empire Zone tax credits for DestiNY USA, provided the developer spends at least $1 billion on the project, and creates at least 3.2 million square feet of new, income-generating retail and entertainment space.

Reforming Empire Zones

The Empire Zone program is credited with creating 1,555 new jobs in Syracuse and retaining 2,210 jobs locally.

To ensure Empire Zones continue to provide jobs in Central New York – while operating with accountability – Assemblyman Magnarelli supports the Assembly’s Empire Zones reform package (A.9021-A), which makes sure businesses receiving benefits actually create jobs.
