Providing tax relief to Onondaga County
Assemblyman Magnarelli holds tax relief as a top priority, and worked to send
more than $1 billion back to property taxpayers in the form of rebate checks.
Onondaga County homeowners who receive Basic STAR will receive an average
$209 rebate and seniors receiving Enhanced STAR will receive an average of
$318. Plus, higher eligibility income levels mean more seniors will save up to
$1,203

Magnarelli successfully fought to eliminate the state sales tax on clothing and
shoes under $110
He also helped create a $330 per child tax credit, ended the marriage penalty tax
and capped the state sales tax on gasoline at the $2 per gallon rate
Keeping drunk drivers off the road
Magnarelli sponsored the Leaf/Woods Bill, which increases penalties for repeat drunk
drivers who subsequently kill or seriously injure others by driving under the influence
of alcohol or drugs (Ch. 245 of 2006)
He also sponsored a measure that holds out-of-state DWI offenders responsible
for their actions and makes all other state offenses count against the offender in
New York State (Ch. 231 of 2006)
Bringing renovation and economic development to Syracuse
Magnarelli wrote the Ash Street Bill (Ch. 70 of 2006), which allows Syracuse
to purchase a vacant property for $1 from the state. The city can then provide
more affordable housing in downtown Syracuse and revitalize the city
Magnarelli also secured $8.4 million to renovate downtown Syracuse, including
$6.4 million for the historic Landmark Theatre and other downtown locations
Combating Medicaid fraud
The Assembly and Senate agreed to create the Office of the Medicaid Inspector General
to combat Medicaid fraud and implement stricter penalties for offenders. This measure
will save New York taxpayers millions of dollars and make sure those who need access
to this critical program will receive it.
