Magnarelli helps secure record funding for New York’s education system

With the largest education investment in New York State history, schools will receive an unprecedented $1.7 billion more than last year. In the 120th Assembly District, schools will receive over $333 million in school aid.

More specifically:

• Baldwinsville will receive a 6.6 percent increase

• Westhill will receive a 6.8 percent increase

• Syracuse will receive a 9 percent increase

• West Genesee will receive an 11.6 percent increase

• Solvay will receive a 15.8 percent increase

Assemblyman Magnarelli believes that this funding will not just provide our children with a sound, basic education—but a first-class, quality education that will help them be successful throughout their lives.

Raising the bar for schools statewide

Magnarelli supported the governor’s Contract for Excellence initiative in the new budget. The plan is designed to raise standards by requiring each school district to demonstrate how its additional state funding is being used to reduce classroom overcrowding, increase time for learning, ensure teacher quality and improve educational performance.

Giving all 4-year-olds a head start on learning

The budget provides $8.1 million for universal pre-kindergarten for the 120th Assembly District. This will ensure every 4-year-old has the opportunity to begin his or her education early.

Supporting New York’s colleges and universities

Assemblyman Magnarelli fought for more funding for New York’s institutions of higher learning. This year, the budget provides Onondaga Community College with $975,777 more than last year.

The budget also:

• increases operating aid for SUNY by $10 million

• does not raise tuition at SUNY schools

• continues to fund the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and higher education opportunity programs

• adds $7 million more for Educational Opportunity Centers and Attain Labs to help students of all ages acquire new skills and succeed in the workforce

• provides $3.1 million—a 3 percent increase—for programs such as EOP, HEOP, SEEK and Liberty Partnerships to help working families afford a college education

Assemblyman Magnarelli believes this year’s state budget reflects the Assembly’s commitment to our public colleges and universities and the future of our college students. This significant investment in higher education will help New York’s academic institutions run more efficiently so that our students will be better prepared to be our leaders of tomorrow.
