Historic Records Grants NYS Department of Education The New York State Department of Education is accepting applications for projects that identify, survey and plan for the systematic collection of records relating to under-documented subjects, institutions or activities; projects to arrange and describe historical records already in repositories; and projects to develop strategic plans for historical records repositories. ELIGIBILITY: Non-profit archives, libraries, historical societies and similar institutions in New York state and consortia or cooperating groups of such agencies are eligible to apply. Historical service agencies, colleges and universities, professional associations and other non-profit institutions or systems which provide services to historical records programs are also eligible. FUNDING: A total of $100,000 is available for grants ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. DEADLINE: March 1, 2001. Grant applications and reference materials are also available on-line at http://www.archives.nysed.gov Recreational Trails Program NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is accepting applications for local assistance grants made available under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), Recreational Trails Program. Eligible projects include those involving the acquisition, new development, renovation development or maintenance of trails and/or trail-related facilities which will further develop projects or goals identified in the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP). ELIGIBILITY: Private organizations, state and federal agencies, Indian tribal governments and other public agencies and authorities are eligible. FUNDING: Approximately $1.5 million is available for grants ranging from $5,000 to $100,000. Grant recipients will be expected to provide at least 20 percent match to these awards. Learning and Telemedicine U.S. Department of Agriculture The United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Utilities Service is accepting applications for Distance Learning and Telemedicine projects which serve rural America. Fulfilling community needs must be the driving factor in projects. Successful projects produce tangible and intangible benefits such as reduced costs to individuals and participating institutions, saving of lives, and increased numbers of students attending college. ELIGIBILITY: Incorporated organizations, partnerships, Indian tribes and tribal organizations which operate or will operate a school, college, university learning center, training facility, or other educational institution, including a regional educational laboratory, library, hospital, medical center, medical clinic or any rural community facility are eligible. Also eligible are incorporated organizations which provide or propose to provide telemedicine service or distance learning service to other legal entities or consortia at rates calculated to ensure that the economic value and other benefits of the grant or loan are passed through to other legal entities or consortia. FUNDING: Funding will be provided in three categories: 1) $15 million will be available for grants; 2) $200 million will be available for loans; and 3) $110 million will be available for combination grants and loans ($10 million in grants paired with $100 million in loans). DEADLINE: March 2, 2001. They encourage early submission of grant applications to determine whether all required items are clearly in form, identifiable and complete. Rural Utilities Service will examine, provide comment, and return applications that include items that would disqualify them from further consideration for modification if they are submitted by February 2, 2001. The program provides grants to pay for the Federal share of the cost of innovative model programs providing for the establishment, improvement, or expansion of foreign language study for elementary and secondary students. The Department of Education supports projects that: 1) show the promise of being continued beyond their project period; 2) demonstrate approaches that can be disseminated and duplicated in other local educational agencies; and 3) may include a professional development component. ELIGIBILITY: Local educational agencies are eligible. FUNDING: It is anticipated that $5 million will be available to fund awards ranging from $50,000 to $175,000. DEADLINE: January 26, 2001. The purpose of this program is to provide assistance to economically disadvantaged and minority graduate students who participate in community development work study programs and are enrolled full-time in a graduate community building degree program. ELIGIBILITY: Institutions of higher education, area-wide planning organizations, and states are eligible. FUNDING: Approximately $3 million is available. DEADLINE: February 2, 2001. Brockport The State University of New York, College at Brockport is offering a two-day basic how-to Grants Writing Course. The course will be offered on two consecutive Saturdays, March 31 and April 7, 2001 and again on Monday/Tuesday, May 14 and 15, 2001 from 8:30 am – 4 pm each day at the SUNY Brockport campus (15 miles outside of Rochester, NY). The course is offered as a pass/fail course for one college credit at the undergraduate or graduate level at a cost ranging from $137 to $213 depending on whether it is taken for undergraduate or graduate credit. It can also be taken for continuing education credit at a cost of $100 for the two days. The five-day class is kept to a maximum of 26 participants and costs $675 ($625 for each additional registrant from the same agency).
