New York State Black Legislative Task Force Mourns the Passing of Civil Rights Icon Dr. Hazel N. Dukes
Albany, NY – The New York State Black Legislative Task Force mourns the passing of Dr. Hazel N. Dukes, a fearless champion for civil rights, a dedicated advocate for justice, and a guiding force in the fight for racial and economic equity. As president of the NAACP New York State Conference and a lifelong leader in the struggle for Black liberation, Dr. Dukes left an indelible mark on our state and nation.
“Dr. Hazel Dukes was the embodiment of resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice,” said the Taskforce in a joint statement. “For decades, she fought tirelessly to advance civil rights, uplift marginalized communities, and ensure that Black and Brown voices were heard in every space where decisions were made. Her influence can be felt in the halls of government, in community organizations, and in the lives of the countless people she mentored and empowered.”
Dr. Dukes was a mentor, a trailblazer, and an institution within the civil rights movement. Her work extended far beyond the NAACP – she shaped policy, cultivated young leaders, and held those in power accountable. She stood at the forefront of the fight for voting rights, economic justice, and educational equity, never wavering in her pursuit of a more just and fair society.
“As we reflect on Dr. Dukes’ extraordinary life, we recommit ourselves to the work she championed,” the Taskforce continued. “We will carry forward her mission by pushing for stronger protections for voting rights, greater investments in historically underserved communities, and policies that break down systemic barriers to opportunity.”
The Taskforce extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Dukes’ family, friends, and all those who were impacted by her decades of service. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
