New York State Black Legislative Task Force and Elmcor Host Historic Non-Profit Advocacy Day, Calling for $50 Million to Support Community-Based Organizations

Albany, NY - The New York State Black Legislative Task Force, in collaboration with Elmcor, hosted our first-ever Non-Profit Advocacy Day in Albany, advocating for $50 million in the state budget to support community-based organizations across New York that provide essential services in health, civic engagement, housing, education, economic empowerment, cultural preservation, and criminal justice reform for underserved communities.

“The New York State Black Legislative Task Force (NYSBLT) held a Non-Profit Advocacy Day because we know that nonprofits are already doing the work, but they need greater access to funding. In the Assembly one-house budget, our Speaker designated $90 million towards socially disadvantaged groups, and NYSBLT secured a commitment that we hope will remain throughout the budget process. We are requesting $50 million to support the organizations that participated in Non-Profit Advocacy Day, as well as those that were not present, so they can continue providing critical services to Black communities across New York State.” – Assemblymember Chantel Jackson, Chair, South Bronx.

“Nonprofits are the lifeblood of our communities, providing essential services, advocating for equity, and creating pathways to opportunity for those who need it most. On Monday, we witnessed a historic moment as nearly 100 Black-led organizations came together in Albany to amplify their voices and demand the resources necessary to sustain their critical work. I stand in full support of the $50 million funding request for socially disadvantaged groups because investing in these organizations means investing in stronger, healthier, and more self-sufficient communities. Our collective power is undeniable, and together, we will ensure that New York’s policies and funding reflect the needs of the people we serve.” – Assemblymember Stefani Zinerman, Vice-Chair, Assembly District 56.

“As legislators, we have to meet the people where they are. We are proud that nonprofit organizations that positively impact our communities have the opportunity to engage and advocate on our communities’ behalf.” – Assemblymember Landon Dais, Assembly District 77.

The Taskforce looks forward to continuing to work with our colleagues in the legislature, community leaders, and advocates to ensure that the final state budget reflects a true commitment to equity and economic justice. This $50 million investment is not just about funding – it is about sustaining the vital work of Black-led and community-based organizations. The New York State Black Legislative Task Force remains steadfast in its mission to secure the resources necessary for these organizations to thrive, so they can continue to uplift and empower the communities they serve.
