Lavine Announces Early Voting Locations in Nassau County

Plainview, New York – Assemblymember and Chair of the Election Law Committee, Charles D. Lavine (D-Glen Cove) is pleased to announce that the Mid-Island Y JCC in Plainview will serve as an early voting polling site along with 14 other locations across Nassau County.

“After many years of trying, the state legislature has finally succeeded in passing the most comprehensive voting legislation New Yorkers have seen in a long time,” said Lavine. “The ability to cast a ballot early in New York State is long overdue and Nassau County residents will now have the opportunity to do so with ease.”

Beginning on October 26th and continuing through November 3rd, the period of early voting statewide, registered voters in Nassau County will be able to cast their ballots at any of the 15 designated early voting sites across the county. In addition to a variety of locations, voters will have the opportunity to visit their chosen polling site on the weekend, allowing for those with difficult schedules to participate in the process.

County Executive Laura Curran: “Voting is our most fundamental right as Americans. Nassau County is offering early voting at 15 different locations to ensure all voters have the opportunity to exercise that right. We’re committed to making it easier – not harder – for our residents to participate in our democracy. I thank Chuck Lavine and state lawmakers for getting this historic voting reform legislation across the finish line.”

Senator Jim Gaughran: “This year the State Legislature ushered in historic voting reform laws including early voting. These reforms will modernize our fundamental democratic right -- the right to vote. I am pleased that Nassau County has opened up 15 early voting sites across the county, including Mid-Island Y JCC, to make voting easier and more accessible for all. Thank you Assemblyman Lavine for your leadership as Chairman of the Elections Committee on these transformative reforms."

Senator Kevin Thomas: "The right to vote and participate in elections is the very foundation of our democracy. Early voting is critical to breaking down barriers and improving participation in the democratic process. I want to thank County Executive Laura Curran and Nassau Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner David Gugerty for working to ensure equal access across Nassau County for those who want to exercise their voting rights."

Legislator Arnold Drucker: “By implementing a series of reforms including early voting, New York has become a national model for preserving voting rights and expanding access to the ballot. I am delighted that a vital community center like the Mid Island Y JCC will be an early voting site, and I urge residents across Nassau County to learn how they can avail themselves of these new opportunities to participate in the democratic process.”

David Gugerty, Nassau County Board of Elections Commissioner: “The bi-partisan team at the Nassau Board of Elections is ready, willing and able to implement the exciting and convenient new process of Early Voting which we applaud the State Legislature and Governor for passing. We are pleased to have reached agreement to open 15 Early Voting sites which is twice the minimum required. For information on the location and hours for Early Voting visit Nassauvotes.com”

Susan Gottehrer, NY Civil Liberties Union Nassau County Director: “Every voice deserves to be heard in our democracy, and passing early voting in New York is an important step in reaching that goal. With nine extra days to cast ballots, barriers like work schedules, family obligations, health conditions, transportation limitations and overcrowded polling places, will be minimized. Other counties should follow Nassau’s lead by providing enough early voting sites where anyone can cast their ballot at a time that works for them.”

Jarret Berg, Let NY Vote Co-Founder: “By rolling out a robust inaugural early voting program of 15 countywide vote centers that all voters can access beginning this fall, Nassau officials are bringing much-needed modernity and convenience to New York elections.”

Susan Lerner, Common Cause NY Executive Director: “Nassau County is a model for how other counties in New York should run early voting. County-wide voting centers well-placed throughout the county, where any eligible Nassau voter can vote, are key for allowing access to the polls—other counties should take note."

Rick Lewis, Mid-Island Y JCC CEO: “The Mid-Island Y JCC is proud to be the Center of our Community and to welcome all community members into our home. Opening our doors for the Board of Elections and providing the opportunity for everyone to exercise their right to vote is part of what we do.”
