Assemblyman Stirpe’s Paint Recycling Event Diverts Over 55,000 Pounds of Paint from Landfills
Local paint drive in North Syracuse keeps communities safe and sustainable
As a hallmark of his statewide paint recycling legislation, Assemblyman Stirpe is pleased to announce the completion of his Spring Paint Recycling Event on May 17th in North Syracuse. In keeping with the biannual paint recycling events held in years prior, this initiative gave constituents a free way to dispose of their unwanted paint, raised awareness about year-round paint recycling, and diverted tons of paint away from landfills.
Held in partnership with GreenSheen Paint, the event was an outstanding success. A total of 577 cars dropped by the event, filling up 70 cubic yard boxes of paint throughout the program. After sorting and weighing the product in their Rotterdam facility, GreenSheen collected 50,601 pounds of latex/water/acrylic-based paints and coatings as well as 4,693 pounds of oil-based. Together, 55,294 pounds of paint - or almost 28 tons – were collected and recycled to be resold as a new product. Along with paint, GreenSheen recycles the bucket and the lid to ensure that the entirety of the product is recycled sustainably and holistically.
“I’ve always said: ‘If you give people the opportunity to do the right thing, they will.’” Assemblyman Stirpe said. “That’s why we continue to do paint and electronics recycling events every year.”
Assemblyman Stirpe encourages residents to continue recycling paint to promote responsible disposal and a greener community. As a result of the paint stewardship program that Stirpe and his Assembly colleagues spearheaded, PaintCare offers several year-round drop-off sites to accept leftover paint from the public.
