Assemblyman Stirpe: Every Kid Can Be a Hero during This Year’s Summer Reading Challenge
Summer vacation is almost here, and that means it’s the perfect time for our kids to run, jump and play outside. But did you know they can also save the world, defeat the bad guy or make the winning shot – all without leaving home? This season, inspire your child to have fun and become a reading hero by participating in the Assembly’s Summer Reading Challenge. Many studies have shown that reading during summer months helps students improve their reading skills, stay engaged and continue the progress they’ve made during the school year. That’s why the Assembly partners with local schools and libraries each year to host the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage kids to keep reading even after school has ended. The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is, “Every Hero Has a Story” for children and, “Unmask!” for teens, highlighting tales of courageous individuals who have overcome tremendous obstacles to achieve greatness. To participate, students must read at least 40 days during July and August for at least 15 minutes per day. They can track their progress on a special calendar – provided at their school – then submit it to my office at 7293 Buckley Road, Suite 201, N. Syracuse, NY 13212 to earn a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate. I’ll present each student with their certificate by mail or in their classroom in the fall. By keeping up with their reading this summer, every child can be a hero. Libraries throughout Central New York will be participating in the Summer Reading Challenge, and some will even host a kickoff event featuring fun activities for kids and teens.
