Assemblyman Stirpe: Assembly Passes Legislation to Provide Paid Family Leave
Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-Cicero) announced the Assembly passed legislation he supported to implement paid family leave benefits for injury or sickness, pregnancy or to care for a family member (A.3870-A).
“Working parents need the flexibility to care for their families without risking their job or financial security,” said Assemblyman Stirpe. “The Assembly’s legislation will improve the lives of working women and men by making it easier for them to balance work and family responsibilities.”
While the federal Family and Medical Leave Act guarantees 12 weeks of unpaid leave, most people can’t afford to take unpaid time off from work, and unfortunately, about 40 percent of the workforce is not covered by this policy, noted Stirpe.1
This legislation would cover two-thirds of an employee’s salary for up to 12 weeks and guarantee job security upon their return. Workers would contribute a maximum of just 45 cents per week to this policy.
“Paid family leave isn’t just good for families – it’s good for the economy and society as a whole,” Assemblyman Stirpe said. “I urge the Senate to consider this crucial legislation to guarantee all workers the opportunity to care for their loved ones when they’re needed the most.”
