Assemblyman Al Stirpe Hosted 5th Annual E-Recycling Event to Reduce Waste

Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-Cicero) hosted his annual electronics recycling event on Saturday, April 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Great Northern Mall in Clay.

“People have had an undeniable adverse impact on our environment, but that doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause,” Stirpe said. “If we all do our part – whether it be reducing waste, reusing what we have or recycling the things we no longer need – we can go a long way in preserving our natural resources for generations to come.”

Up to 99 percent of the materials within many common electronics are recyclable.1 However, unlike products like aluminum cans, which are made from a singular, sortable material and easily recycled, the varied materials within electronics must be deconstructed and sorted using advanced procedures.

New York residents are legally required to recycle electronic waste, but finding places to responsibly dispose of these products can be difficult. To address this, Assemblyman Stirpe teamed up with Sunnking Inc. and Charter Communications to collect a total of nine tractor trailers of recycled electronics, weighing nearly 200,000 pounds. Electronic items recycled at the free event included: small appliances, computers, mobile devices, copiers and fax machines, routers and televisions. By changing our daily habits and encouraging conservation and responsible waste management, we can curb climate change and pollution, noted Stirpe.

In addition to helping Central New Yorkers responsibly dispose of electronic waste, the event raised funds for the Cicero-North Syracuse Northstars Marching Band.

“Despite the blustery winds and frequent snow squalls our volunteers from the North Syracuse Marching Band did a tremendous job unloading cars, trucks and trailers, keeping the lines moving so that wait times were never longer than 10-15 minutes,” Stirpe said.
