Scarsdale – Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D-88) is pleased to announce that A.1797A, legislation she authored, was passed by the New York State Assembly on Thursday.

The bill would extend orders of protection in relation to felony or misdemeanor sexual assault cases to ensure that victims are protected while their abusers are on probation. Under the bill, in cases of felony sexual assault, the maximum length of an order of protection would be 10 years and six years in cases of misdemeanor sexual assault.

“Just because an abuser is on probation doesn’t mean he or she is no longer a threat to the person he or she abused,” Paulin said. “The protection provided to an abused should continue during the time the abused is subject to probation.”

Paulin’s bill was part of a larger legislative package that was passed by the Assembly on Thursday in an effort to help crime victims. The legislation coincides with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
