Cruz, Hevesi, Addabbo organize local events series in Central Queens
Queens, NY – New York State Assemblymembers Catalina Cruz, Andrew Hevesi, and Senator Joe Addabbo are partnering to bring more resources and local events to Central Queens towards the end of summer and into the fall.
The first of the events takes place on Saturday, August 17, when the legislators will be hosting a rain barrel distribution from 11am to 1pm on 80th Street in Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village, between Juniper Boulevard North and Juniper Boulevard South. Due to high demand, those wishing to secure a barrel must register in advance by calling either Assemblymember Cruz at (718) 458-5367 or Hevesi at (718) 263-5595. Barrels will be limited to one per household, and recipients must reside within Cruz, Hevesi, or Addabbo’s districts.
Also on August 17, the legislators will cosponsor an electronic-waste recycling, paper shredding, and clothing donation effort with the Shops at Atlas Park at 8000 Cooper Avenue, Glendale, NY 11385 from 10am to 1pm.
On Thursday, August 22, from 10am-12pm outside Middle Village Bagels (79-16 Eliot Avenue, Middle Village, NY 11379) the officials are hosting a free back-to-school backpack distribution for students K-8. Backpacks will be distributed first-come, first-serve with families able to secure supplies for each child they have present. Those unable to secure backpacks will be referred to future distribution efforts.
Finally, after a successful 2024 spring community cleanups series, the offices are organizing more cleanups throughout the fall, which will take place across the legislators’ districts. The efforts aim to promote engagement, provide student service hour opportunities, and offer local residents a chance to give back and collaborate. Partners include the Middle Village Property Owners and Residents Association, headed by President Paul Pogozelski, who also runs the Middle Village Roller Hockey League.
Those interested in the community cleanup series have been encouraged to reach out to Hevesi, Cruz, or Addabbo’s offices to remain up-to-date on efforts and announcements.
“We are committed to enhancing the well-being of our neighbors, and these upcoming events are a perfect example of how we can come together to make a difference. By providing essential resources like rain barrels and school supplies, and creating opportunities for environmental stewardship, we’re not just addressing immediate needs—we’re building a stronger, more connected community. I’m grateful to partner with Assemblymember Hevesi, Senator Addabbo, and our local organizations to bring these initiatives to life,” said Assemblymember Catalina Cruz.
“We’re extremely fortunate to work alongside so many incredible partners and neighbors. As always, I must thank my colleagues, Assemblymember Cruz and Senator Addabbo for their collaboration, as well as Paul Pogozelski, the Middle Village Property Owners & Residents Association, and the Shops at Atlas Park for their dedication and partnership. We’re looking forward to a great event season,” said Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi.
“Together with Assemblymembers Cruz and Hevesi, I am excited to bring these valuable resources to our Middle Village community. From rain barrel distributions to back-to-school giveaways, we are committed to supporting our residents and promoting sustainability. I encourage everyone to participate and take advantage of these opportunities to strengthen our neighborhood,” said Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr.
“We are beyond delighted to be involved in these neighborhood outreach efforts. Raising awareness and stewardship amongst our members is paramount. These Clean up events benefit our whole community and bridges the local merchants with residents.
