Assemblyman Ari Brown (R-Cedarhurst), Ranking Minority member on the Assembly Local Governments Committee, addressed some pointed questions on crime, cashless bail laws and ways to better support law enforcement to New York City Mayor Eric Adams at a budgetary hearing last week. Brown has been a staunch opponent of cashless bail since he ran for and was elected to the Assembly in April 2022.
“Many businesses around the city, both large and small, have pleaded for changes to the [cashless bail] law to address serial shoplifters—we have the same problem on Long Island,” Brown prefaced. “Brazen criminals have impacted the quality of life of New Yorkers by repeatedly shoplifting at bodegas, grocery stores, CVSs, Walgreens, and many other types of stores every day. These criminals are even assaulting workers who try to stop them. What’s your plan to address this issue Mr. Mayor?”
New York City saw a 15-year high in felony crimes last year, totaling nearly 170,000 instances. While murders across the city decreased from 2021 to 2022, every other major category of crime, including robberies and grand larceny, increased during that time period.
