Brown Defends Long Island Suburbia Against Gov.’s Reckless ‘Housing Compact’

Assemblyman Ari Brown (R-Cedarhurst), Ranking Minority member on the Assembly Local Governments Committee, asked some pointed questions of Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas at the Joint Legislative Budget Hearing on Housing in Albany Wednesday. Gov. Hochul’s proposed ‘Housing Compact’ would mandate municipalities on Long Island meet a quota of newly-constructed housing units around transportation hubs. The plan mandates the construction of roughly 1 million new housing units to be constructed on Long Island in the coming years.
“Make no mistake, this is a blatant assault on our suburbs, to remove “Home Rule” of the towns and villages. The Governor wants to turn our small towns and villages into another unsustainable borough of New York City,” Brown said. “The state’s financial commitment to make this happen is a pittance to what it will actually cost our local governments”. “I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Assembly and Senate, and fight for the rights of Long Islanders and all of the residents of the state”.
