Brown Joins Bipartisan Group Against Hochul High-Rise Housing Mandates
Assemblyman Ari Brown (R-Cedarhurst) joined a press conference today in Albany reaffirming opposition to Gov. Hochul’s high-rise housing plan, which mandates Long Island communities meet a new construction quota for housing in the coming years. The governor has insisted she will direct the state to override local zoning laws if municipalities resist her housing mandates. Separately, the governor has proposed high quotas for local governments to construct “Transit-Oriented Housing” around train and subway stations on Long Island.
“As I said in our joint budget hearings, make no mistake, removing “Home Rule” of towns and villages is a blatant assault on our suburbs. The governor wants to turn our small towns and villages into another unsustainable borough of New York City,” Brown said. “The state’s financial commitment to make this happen is a pittance to what it will actually cost our local governments. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Assembly and Senate and fight for the rights of Long Islanders and all of the residents of the state”.
The press conference was held by Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square) with remarks by Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin and Eric Swenson from the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee.
