Glick Bill to Extend Pet Trusts Signed into Law

Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick, 66th Assembly District, announced today that Governor Paterson has signed into law her legislation (A.5985/S3070) that would repeal the 21-year limitation on pet trusts. Until now, pet owners who wished to provide in their wills and trusts for the continuing care of their animals were limited to 21-year duration. “Now pet owners can provide for their pets for the life of the animal,” stated Glick. “Many people have pets with a longer life than 21 years like parrots which can live to 90 years or horses which often live to 30 years.”

This law change strengthens the mechanism where pet owners provide for the continuing care of their animals. This change takes effect immediately.
