First-Ever Environmental Facilities and Cancer Map Now On-line

Binghamton – Senator Tom Libous and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo announced today a new website that will show its visitors locations of certain types of cancer incidences as well as the location of environmental restoration sites, voluntary cleanup sites, hazardous waste generators and more.

“After the number of childhood cancers discovered in Hillcrest, there was a lot of concern about the environment and any potential relationship between it and the health of these young kids. That’s why I sponsored the legislation that created this website,” said Senator Tom Libous.

"Cancer mapping could assist in determining if there is any correlation between types of cancer cases and possible social, environmental and other factors which may have impacted the cancer clusters,” said Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, a co-sponsor of the bill and member of the Environmental Conservation Committee. "This program is especially important to communities like Endicott where we have been dealing with the consequences of vapor intrusion for many years."

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health collected the information which uses 2000 Census figures to show for the first time statistics about cancer in a tight geographic area. The interactive website allows users to plug-in any address or zip code in New York State and see different pieces of data related to cancer and the environment in that specific location.

“This website takes information out of a dusty file cabinet up in Albany and puts it out in public so anyone can use it. And I’ll be looking at even more ways we can use technology to make government more open and accessible,” said Libous.

The Environmental Facilities and Cancer Map can be found on the Department of Health’s website at www.nyhealth.gov.
