Albany, NY – As Women’s History Month came to a close, Broome County Health Department Director Rebecca Kaufman is being honored at the state level. Each year, the NYS Legislative Women’s Caucus recognizes outstanding women leaders from across the state; this year’s focus was on essential workers. Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo nominated Kaufman as part this year’s Women’s History Month celebration.

Due to ongoing COVID restrictions, a virtual presentation was put together by the LWC in lieu of the traditional gallery at the State Capitol. In the presentation, Assemblywoman Lupardo said of Kaufman:

“As Director of the Broome County Health Department, Rebecca has been at the center of the County’s response to COVID-19 since Day 1 of the pandemic. She has helped organize and implement the complex testing, contact tracing, and vaccination systems locally, while also assisting our health care providers, businesses, and community navigate the evolving guidance issued by the state. Her management of the Health Department over the last year has provided needed expertise during the worst public health crisis in a century.”

“I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition,” said Broome County Executive Jason Garnar. “Director Kaufman has worked day and night as we have faced the COVID-19 pandemic, leading her team and helping keep our residents educated and safe.”

Kaufman was one of 35 women recognized by members of the LWC, all of whom are essential workers on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic.
