Assemblyman Thiele Announces Historic Support for Local School Districts in 2023-24 State Budget

Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (D-Sag Harbor) today announced that the approved State Budget for Fiscal Year 2023-24 includes $34 billion in General Support for Public Schools, an increase of $3 billion over the 2022-23 school year. The enacted budget also contains $24 billion to complete the phase in of the Foundation Aid formula and a $2.6 billion increase to fully fund Foundation Aid for the first time since the formula was created in 2007. This will provide a long overdue increase in Foundation Aid, especially for many school districts on the East End.

The Enacted 2023-24 Budget also includes no tuition increases for New York State residents at public colleges and universities. The plan provides $1.38 billion in SUNY operating funds, which is $178 million over SFY 2022-23, and $821.4 million in CUNY operating funds, which is an increase of $103 million over SFY 2022-23.

Assemblyman Thiele stated, “I am immensely proud that the State Budget broadens access to education, keeps college tuition affordable for the middle class and includes critical measures to accomplish quality education for our children and students on Long Island and across New York State.

At a time when more and more demands are being placed on local school districts, it is also imperative that New York State updates the data it utilizes in its funding formula including census numbers, number of English language learners, enrollment, and special education. To achieve better quality education for all, there must be adequate support from the state. For this reason, I have co-sponsored bills like A.67 and A.103 by Assemblyman Sayegh that, if enacted, would update Foundation Aid funding to our school districts on the East End and across the state.”

School Districts within Assemblyman Thiele’s district (AD1) will receive the following in Foundation Aid:
