Statement of Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. on Schumer and Bishop’s Call to Renew Over-the-Water Helicopter Rule; Revise Rule to Curb Noise Over North Fork and Shelter Island

“Over the past several years, we, as East End elected officials have banded together to fight for over-the-water helicopter routes to ensure that the least number of homeowners are negatively affected by summertime air traffic and noise. With the success of the temporary rule set in 2012 which established a North Shore over-the-water helicopter route, Senator Schumer and Congressman Bishop are now stepping up to ensure that the rule which expires on August 6, 2014 is made permanent. I appreciate their support in calling for helicopters to follow a total water route, requiring them to head east past Orient Point to avoid Shelter Island when approaching South Fork airports.”
