New York State Legislature Passed Museum Education Act
State aid supports student access to arts, culture and education
Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF, WE - Sag Harbor) today announced that the New York State Legislature passed the Museum Education Act (MEA) (A.3892-A/S.1676-A), which provides state aid to support educational services offered by arts and cultural institutions throughout New York.
This legislation, which Assemblyman Thiele co-sponsored, directs the commissioner of education to establish and implement a museum education grant program. This program will provide state aid to museums, historical societies, nature centers, zoos, botanical gardens, arboretums, aquariums and cultural organizations to establish education programs for elementary and secondary school students, and for those participating in continuing education in low-income urban, suburban or rural communities.
“These institutions are beloved gems throughout the state and provide communities with a wealth of knowledge and historical insight that is irreplaceable. I could not be happier that the State Assembly and Senate came together to support this measure,” said Assemblyman Thiele. “It is critical that New York State continue investing funds that provide opportunities for the public, and especially students, to immerse themselves in arts, culture and history.”
The legislation will be delivered to the Governor for consideration.
