Assemblyman Thiele Congratulates a Local Student on Being Nominated for the Presidential Scholars Program
Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) announced that one of the students he recommended has been chosen by State Education Department Interim Commissioner Betty A. Rosa to be part of the twenty-five New York State high school seniors nominated for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Ms. Alexis Phillips of Hampton Bays High School was the selected nominee.
The Presidential Scholars Program was established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and recognizes high school seniors on the basis of outstanding scholarship. This recognition is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. Interim Commissioner Rosa has nominated twenty high school seniors – ten females and ten males – and five students in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs from New York to be considered for this honor
Assemblyman Thiele stated, “I am thrilled that Interim Commissioner Rosa has chosen one of my local students to be part of the five New York State high school seniors nominated for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program in Career and Technical Education! Ms. Alexis Phillips is an exceptional student who stands out as having academic success, leadership qualities, and extraordinary personal achievements. I am proud to represent this fine young woman in the First Assembly District and wish Alexis luck as she moves to the next level in this notable competition.”
The Commission on Presidential Scholars will select the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars and those students will receive the prestigious Presidential Scholars Medallion.
