“A bill was recently signed into law creating the Opioid Settlement Fund, which will bolster New York’s efforts to combat a devastating crisis that has ravaged our communities. This new law will ensure that funds the state receives from legal settlements brought against opioid manufacturers and distributors by the state Attorney General’s Office are only used for eligible expenditures, such as substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery programs and public education campaigns to combat the opioid epidemic (Ch. 190 of 2021). It will also prevent these funds from being used to supplant or replace existing state or federal funds that would be used for prevention, treatment and recovery programs or services. Some of the best tools we can offer those struggling with addiction are properly funded treatment programs so they can get the vital help and support they need.

The creation of this law is a major victory for the people of New York State and comes at a time when we’re making great strides to hold the opioid industry accountable for their role in this epidemic. In addition to a recent $230 million settlement with Johnson & Johnson – some of which is expected within months thanks to the creation of the Opioid Settlement Fund – the Attorney General’s Office has brought lawsuits against the remaining opioid manufacturers and distributors.While we can’t bring back the lives lost to the opioid epidemic, we can ensure that treatment and recovery programs are in place for those in need. The Assembly will remain committed to increasing prevention efforts and helping those struggling from substance use disorders.”
