Assemblymember Gabriella Romero Sponsors Bill to Make Vehicle Accident History Transparent for Consumers

Albany, NY - New York State Assemblymember Gabriella A. Romero (D, WFP) announced new legislation, bill A.10384/S.9377, which will allow the DMV to report non-personal vehicle accident history in bulk. This will allow for greater transparency for consumers purchasing a used vehicle, allowing them to know the vehicle’s full record before purchase.

New York law currently allows for a vehicle’s information to be released only on a per-vehicle basis, making the process of requesting records slow, and can result in sales taking place without full knowledge of the vehicle’s history. This bill will allow the DMV to give full access to these records, so that it is easier for consumers to be fully informed about the safety and value of a vehicle before they buy it.

Assemblymember Gabriella A. Romero:

“I believe transparency is an essential part of business, and selling cars should be no different. With files for over 1.4 million accidents currently in the DMV’s database, it’s a matter of personal safety for consumers to have full, unimpeded access to this information before making a purchase. This bill ensures that every vehicle’s records are standardized in a common format, available to all vendors without request, and anonymous to maintain the privacy of previous owners. This is an important step in creating a safer, more transparent, and consumer-friendly car sales industry in New York State.”
