Assemblywoman Giglio Urges Preparedness as Winter Storm Approaches

Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R,C-Riverhead) today urged residents to prepare for a significant winter storm expected to impact Long Island and the Rockaways beginning late on Saturday, Jan. 24, through Monday, bringing heavy snow and dangerously cold temperatures. PSEG Long Island has announced its readiness to respond to any potential power outages and hazardous conditions.

“While the snow expected with this system may be light and powdery, extreme cold and hazardous travel conditions can still pose risks to our communities,” said Giglio. “I encourage all residents to take storm preparations seriously, follow safety guidelines and know how to report power issues if they arise.”

Storm Preparedness & Safety:

Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 20s or below throughout the weekend. Although the powdery snow typically does not threaten electrical infrastructure directly, icy roads and reduced visibility can increase the likelihood of accidents that may damage utility equipment.

  • Residents should assume downed wires are live and stay at least six feet away from them. Do not approach or touch them.
  • Never run generators indoors or within 20 feet of windows, doors or vents; keep them well away from homes with a long extension cord.
  • Avoid driving in hazardous conditions whenever possible and plan travel only if absolutely necessary.

Reporting Outages & Staying Informed:

Giglio reminds constituents that power or emergency issues can be reported directly to PSEG Long Island by calling 1‑800‑490‑0075, or through PSEG Long Island’s mobile app and online portal. Signing up for MyAlerts text and email notifications can also help residents receive real‑time updates.

“Preparation is key,” Giglio added. “Take a few moments now to make sure your home, family and neighbors are ready for cold weather and winter conditions. Stay safe and check on each other during this storm.”
