Giglio Honors Vietnam Veteran Sgt. Joe Cognitore for Lifelong Service to Country and Community

Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R,C-Riverhead) today welcomed Sergeant Joe Cognitore, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, to the Assembly Floor in Albany in recognition of his courageous military service and decades of unwavering advocacy for fellow veterans.

Cognitore, a lifelong resident of Rocky Point, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971, one of the most challenging and defining conflicts in American history. During his service, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, serving as both an Acting Platoon Sergeant and Acting Platoon Leader.

“Sergeant Joe Cognitore is a true American hero whose service to our nation did not end when he returned home; it only continued to grow,” Giglio said. “His bravery in combat and his lifelong commitment to supporting veterans embody the very best of our country.”

For his valor, Cognitore was awarded some of the nation’s highest military honors, including the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Air Medal, decorations that reflect extraordinary courage, resilience and dedication to duty.

Following his return home, Cognitore continued his service in a different but equally meaningful way. For more than 30 years, he has been a leader in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as Commander of Fischer-Hewins Post 6249 in Rocky Point. In that role, he has worked tirelessly to support veterans, assist those in need and strengthen the local community.

“Like many Vietnam veterans, Cognitore returned home to a country still grappling with war,” Giglio added. “Yet he never wavered in his commitment to others. His life is a powerful reminder that service does not end when the uniform comes off.”

Giglio delivered her remarks in recognition of Vietnam Veterans Day, emphasizing the importance of honoring not only veterans’ service in uniform but also their continued contributions to their communities.

“Sergeant Cognitore represents the very best of New York and our nation,” Giglio concluded. “We thank him for his service, we honor his sacrifice and we are deeply grateful for all he continues to do for our veterans and our communities.”
