Giglio Joins Governor To Announce New Statewide Initiatives
Five-point plan outlines ways to keep New York’s children and families safer
Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,C,I-Gowanda) today joined Gov. George Pataki in Buffalo to lend his support to the governor’s five-point plan that builds on historic crime reduction successes in New York.
Pataki is calling on the Assembly to pass legislation that establishes a civil confinement policy, creates longer sentences for sexually violent predators, strengthens Megan’s Law, requires all criminals to submit DNA samples, and ends the statute of limitations on rape and other crimes when DNA identifies the perpetrator.
“I am pleased this issue is getting the attention it deserves,” said Giglio. “For too long, sexual predators have been able to fall through the cracks of a broken system. Today’s press conference is beginning to send the message that we, as legislators, are setting our sights on those who prey on our women and children. Sexual predators, registered at any level, should understand our determination and eagerness to end their sordid behavior. As a father, I don’t have to imagine what families in the Southern Tier and throughout the state feel when they send their children off to school and pray for their safe return. My priority is protecting our children and safeguarding our communities.”
Pataki announced details of his five-point plan during stops in several cities throughout the state on Thursday. He first mentioned his plan during Wednesday’s “State of the State” address.
