Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,C,I-Gowanda) today joined his Assembly minority colleagues in Albany to continue the push for their five-point plan that cracks down on criminals who target women and children.

“I am telling everyone who will listen – I am prepared to fight against heinous crimes committed against women and children until the Legislature allows us to do our jobs and vote on these critical measures,” said Giglio. “I spent the better part of last week discussing these new proposals throughout the Southern Tier and Western New York. Today, I take my message to the legislative body in Albany. Our determination to pass these new measures and keep our families safe is nothing less than extraordinary.”

A 10-year registration mandate for certain Level 1 and 2 sex offenders on the state Sex Offender Registry is to lapse on January 21; data about 168 of the predators would be dropped from the registry on that day alone. By year’s end, more than 3,500 sex offenders could be free from registering for the list if the provision in Megan’s Law is not amended.

“I strongly support and think the Senate bill (S.6019) effectively addresses many of the concerns felt by the Assembly minority,” said Giglio. “Requiring sex offenders, regardless of their classification, to annually register with the Division of Criminal Justice Services for life simply makes too much sense to forego. The Assembly minority has been leading the charge to protect our families, and I thank Minority Leader James Tedisco (R,C,I-Schenectady-Saratoga) for his steadfast leadership.”
