Giglio Announces Correction Officer Recruitment
Assemblyman promotes recruitment for New York State correction officers
Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,I,C-Gowanda) today announced that the annual recruitment effort for the Department of Correctional Services has begun. A civil service examination will be held for the position of correction officers on April 4, 2009. The deadline for filing an application is February 17, 2009.
“As a former law enforcement officer, I know how fulfilling a career in law enforcement and correctional services can be,” stated Giglio. “As a correction officer, you are given a chance to serve your community while being compensated with a competitive salary and excellent benefits. I encourage qualifying residents to apply soon as the deadline is fast approaching.”
To qualify you must be 21 years or older, a U.S. citizen, a resident of New York and possess a high school diploma or GED. Appointees must also have passed medical and psychological screenings, as well as a background investigation. Conviction for a felony automatically disqualifies anyone from becoming a correction officer. Misdemeanor convictions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility.
The starting salary for a correction officer trainee starts at $34,329. Examination forms can be downloaded at www.docs.state.ny.us or picked up at all Department of Labor offices and New York State correctional facilities.
