Giglio Announces Passed Legislation: CDL Exemption For Emergency Response Vehicle Operators
Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,I,C-Gowanda) today announced the passage of legislation that will exempt first responders from having to obtain a CDL license in their performance of official duties, or activities related to the execution of emergency governmental functions.
“This issue has plagued our community’s emergency responders for too long, forcing an unnecessary financial burden on those who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities,” stated Giglio. “As we approach Memorial Day weekend, it is only fitting that we amend this burdensome legislation in honor of those who fight to keep our families safe in our communities.”
This bill expands on legislation passed in this year’s budget that exempts first responders from having to obtain a CDL license to drive away from the scene of an emergency, which at the time was categorized as “unofficial business.” When signed by the governor, the bill passed today will allow first responders to drive to a hydrant inspection, training course or building inspection without requiring a CDL license.
Additionally, this legislation conforms to federal regulations and, thereby, helps preserve $31 million in federal highway aid.
“It is unfortunate that our emergency response volunteers had to worry about this in the first place,” stated Giglio. “I am proud to stand beside those who serve and protect our communities each and every day.”
