Assemblyman Joseph M. Giglio (R,C,I-Gowanda) is reminding motorists to use extreme caution in work zones, to ensure not only their own safety, but the safety of construction workers as well.

“As warmer weather approaches, construction season begins and crews will be out more often. Repairing our roads from the harsh winter conditions and making sure they are safe to travel on is paramount for us in western New York,” said Giglio. “I’m urging everyone to utilize extreme caution when traveling through construction zones this spring and summer to protect the men and women working hard to ensure our safety all year long.”

Giglio’s reminder comes during National Work Zone Awareness Week, a joint initiative between the New York State Department of Transportation, Thruway Authority and State Police to help prevent work zone injuries and fatalities.

“Work zones have reduced speed limits, shifted lanes, and other changes to the standard rules of the road to ensure the safety of all those involved, so it is highly important that our drivers take extra care when traveling through these areas,” said Giglio. “I’ve spoken with local highway departments and they have expressed the need to get this message out to the public. Work zone accidents are a much larger issue than one may think, and it’s important that we raise awareness to protect the lives of everyone on our roads.”

National Work Zone Awareness Week’s theme this year is “Don’t Be That Driver,” emphasizing the need for motorists to be extra careful when traveling through a work zone. Aggressive driving, inattentive driving, speeding and cell phone usage all are major causes of accidents on the road. Combining these factors with the close proximity of construction crews to vehicles in work zones makes for an even more dangerous environment. Being more alert and aware could help save a life.
