Assemblyman Blankenbush Advocates for Road Safety in Support of Smullen’s Memorial Bill
Today, Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C-Black River) voiced strong support for Assembly Bill A.3938, the “Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law.” This initiative seeks to establish a statewide traffic safety memorial sign program, offering families a way to commemorate loved ones lost in fatal crashes while serving as a visible reminder of the dangers of reckless driving.
The legislation is deeply personal for Assemblyman Smullen, who lost his son, Alexander John “AJ” Smullen, at the age of 14 after he was struck by a vehicle on February 22, 2024. His tragic passing highlights the urgent need for enhanced awareness and preventative measures to improve traffic safety across New York state.
“This bill is about turning tragedy into a tool for change,” said Blankenbush. “By allowing families to install memorial signs, we not only honor those who have been lost but also encourage drivers to be more mindful and responsible behind the wheel. Assemblyman Smullen has shown remarkable resilience in championing this cause, and I am proud to stand with him in pushing for its passage. This is not just about remembering lives lost—it’s about preventing future tragedies.”
