Blankenbush: Pay Commission Misdirection Is Business As Usual For NYC
A legislative column from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)
With New York struggling to rebuild its image after years of corruption and in-the-dark operations, we cannot afford to betray the recovery process with misguided and shady tactics such as allowing a pay commission to endow legislators with a hefty pay increase.
The recently-formed pay commission, which is made up of the friends of the former legislative leaders convicted of corruption this year, is being tasked with answering the question as to whether New York State legislators deserve a 47 percent increase in their pay. That is corruption in a nutshell. As it stands, the current salary for a state legislator is $79,500 per year, and with a quick decision from this ill-appointed commission it could increase to $116,000 per year.
If legislators are to earn 47 percent more than they did just last session, it should be decided by a vote, where proponents are forced to justify such an increase in pay by making the debate public. This New York City approach to simply appointing a commission to do the dirty work is right in line with the image we are trying to separate ourselves from. There is no transparency and no justification for such a process taking place.
I will push for a process that will allow us to have this debate in the open so our constituents can participate and fully understand why some legislators are asking for a pay increase. The approach to this order of business could very well determine if we will continue down the road of corruption or if we take a new path that includes transparency and honesty with the people who have elected us.
The Assembly Minority Conference has always been the conference of transparency. My colleagues and I will remain steadfast in our advocacy for clarity and continue to shine a light on the shady backroom deals that have given New York a bad reputation. If legislators wish to raise their taxpayer-funded wages, New York’s taxpayers should have the ability to voice their opinions.
