Blankenbush Looking Forward To Maple Weekend

A column from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)

It is almost that time of the year again, a time when we as a community can come together and celebrate an industry that is the largest of its kind in all the U.S. The weekends of March 18 and 25 will grant us the opportunity to celebrate our wonderful maple industry in New York State. At approximately 160 farms and museums across New York, you and your family will be able to indulge in some of the finest maple products this country has to offer. It’s a little known fact that New York is home to the largest number of product-accessible maple trees in the U.S. and over 2,000 sugar makers. This massive industry is still growing, and each year thousands flock to these sugar makers for tours and tastings. Last year alone, New York State produced over 600,000 gallons of maple syrup. With such a versatile flavor, the end product doesn’t have to be just syrup either. Producers have ventured into other uses for the maple extract, creating maple-flavored coffee, maple salad dressing and even maple mustard. I encourage you to venture out of your comfort zone and try something new, you may just surprise yourself.

Last October, I was able to join Lt. Gov. Hochul on the “Maple Trail” and show her how special and important the industry is to our North Country community. Not only is there a positive economic impact from the products produced, but the revenue generated by tourism is also significant to many communities across our district. While her trip didn’t take place during the traditional maple season, it was important for her to visit and learn that this maple industry is a year-round venture, and one that needs to be supported and promoted as such by the state. It was a relief to hear her reiterate the state’s commitment to this wonderful industry, and I look forward to the continued growth of an operation that is loved by all.
