Blankenbush to Join Residents at County Fairs

A Legislative Column from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)

As summer kicks into full gear, people are brought together by events such as block parties, concerts and county fairs to enjoy the nice weather and each other’s company. These events not only strengthen our communities, they also are a great benefit for small businesses and the local economy. In a time when these local fixtures are struggling, fairs and events can be crucial.

In the 117th Assembly District, we are lucky enough to have four wonderful county fairs. These four fairs include the Jefferson County Fair, the Lewis County Fair, the St. Lawrence Country Fair and the Oneida County Fair. If you missed out on the Jefferson and Lewis County Fairs, no worries. The St. Lawrence and Oneida County fairs are taking place during the next two weeks.

I encourage New Yorkers to take a trip as a family to these fairs, not only as a way to support local businesses, but as a way to unwind and enjoy quality time with those closest to you. These fairs are the perfect venue to meet some of the vendors from across an individual county, and allow customers to discover their new favorite craft shop or small business. It also gives adults and kids alike the chance to showcase talents and hobbies, such as animal care, crafting and farming, providing a great learning environment for people of all ages.

I am proud of the milestones some of the counties in the 117th Assembly District have and will be making with their county fairs this year. Oneida County will be celebrating 129 years as a community, while Jefferson County celebrated its 200th birthday and Lewis County celebrated its 197th birthday. I would also like to commemorate the merger of the Canton and Gouverneur Fairs into the St. Lawrence County Fair 83 years ago.

These towns have survived due to the tight-knit communities they encompass. Without events to bring them together and help them grow as a whole, these towns wouldn’t be as successful as they are today. We must continue to support events that provide so many wonderful opportunities to our communities.
