Assemblywoman Buttenschon: Legislation to Improve Dental Health for Pediatric Patients Signed into Law
Today, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-C Marcy) announced that Governor Hochul signed critical legislation into law that would expand access to fluoride dental treatments to pediatric patients. This new law authorizes registered dental assistants and licensed practical nurses to apply fluoride treatments to children in dental offices (A7402B).
“According to the NIH, the most common disease in our children is tooth decay, which can lead to cavities. Tooth decay affects nearly 46% of all children in the United States. Left untreated, the bacteria from tooth decay can cause neurological impairments[1],” explained Assemblywoman Buttenschon. “One of the most effective ways to combat tooth decay in children is to expand access to topical fluoride varnish.”
Fluoride varnish is a safe and effective topical solution for tooth decay prevention. When administered to the tooth, the varnish strengthens the enamel, preventing decay, which results in a cavity. Under previous law, only dentists, dental hygienists, physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and physician assistants could apply fluoride varnish in New York.
To further support families, New York Medicaid reimburses up to four fluoride varnish applications per child per year.
"Allowing more trained dental professionals to apply fluoride varnish will result in our children not only having better dental health but will improve their overall health," said Buttenschon. "I commend the Governor for signing this commonsense bill into law and thank the Assembly for passing this law unanimously."
The legislation underscores Assemblywoman Buttenschon’s commitment and dedication to supporting children and families across the 119th District.[1] https://www.nidcr.nih.gov/news-events/nidcr-news/2024/big-hopes-little-teeth
