Assemblywoman Buttenschon's Statewide Press Conference on Veterans Tuition Awards Program (VTAP) Bill is Successful in Gaining Governor Hochul's Attention
UTICA, NY -Just in time for Veterans Day, Governor Kathy Hochul has signed Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon's Veterans Tuition Awards Program (VTAP) bill (A.9205-A/S.8596-A) into law. This historic legislation expands tuition award eligibility to all New York resident veterans, including those who did not serve in combat that will ensure greater educational access and opportunities for veterans statewide.
This legislation marks a transformative step for veterans' higher education access in New York, allowing nearly 800,000 veterans to transition more smoothly to civilian life, pursue new careers, and contribute to New York's economy. Previously, tuition assistance was limited to those who served in active combat roles, excluding many who also dedicated years to service.
Assemblywoman Buttenschon expressed her gratitude and hope for the program, stating, “As we celebrate Veterans Day, I appreciate the governor signing my bill that will afford many more veterans the opportunity for higher education. Education is one of the building blocks of our communities. I am very grateful for all our Veterans service. Thank you to those that served our Great Nation and I hope all veterans can use this educational steppingstone to further service to our great communities and nation!"
The Veterans Tuition Awards Program has been instrumental for many combat veterans, providing essential support for their educational pursuits. With this bill, New York takes a significant step to extend these benefits to all veterans, including those that served in a non-combat capacity while honoring their service with equal access to educational opportunities that will foster success in civilian life.
This Veterans Day, New York stands proud in recognizing and supporting the sacrifices made by veterans across the state. Governor Hochul's signature on this bill underscores the state's commitment to providing veterans with the resources and respect they deserve.
