Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-Utica/Rome) announced that she is sponsoring a National African American History Month essay contest for local students to honor the trailblazers who stood up against injustice and fought for true equality.

“For over 40 years, we’ve celebrated National African American History Month to recognize the brave individuals who worked tirelessly to combat discrimination and changed history,” Buttenschon said. “This essay contest is a chance for Mohawk Valley students to share their knowledge and learn more about African-American history by writing about the inspiring heroes who fought for civil rights and the events that helped shape our world today.”

National African American History Month has been celebrated in February since 1976 to commemorate the invaluable contributions African Americans have made throughout history and are still making today. Students are encouraged to write about an African American who broke down barriers and worked tirelessly to make our world a better, more inclusive place, or about a significant event that helped shape history.

The top essay entries from each school in the 119th Assembly District will be awarded. The deadline is Feb. 22. Essays can be sent to Buttenschon’s office at 207 Genesee St., Room 401, Utica, NY 13501. They can also be submitted online through her website at nyassembly.gov/buttenschon.
