Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D, I-Utica/Rome) hosted an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) roundtable on Thursday, Oct. 14, in Utica to discuss the needs and concerns of local EMS agencies.

“The roundtable discussion allowed me the opportunity to hear directly from our Emergency Medical Service providers about the challenges they are facing. Just as we are seeing today in many other professions, they, too, are experiencing shortages in the workforce, causing additional and undo stress on our Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics.” Buttenschon said. “These trained medical professionals provide stabilizing and critical care that can be lifesaving in an emergency. “

Buttenschon invited representatives from local EMS and fire agencies that serve her district to the roundtable to determine the legislative priorities of various first responder groups as the state approaches the 2022 legislative session, as well as review what resources they need. First responders had the chance to express their concerns and offer resolutions throughout the event.

Buttenschon has been a supporter of First Responders, including EMS. She authored a resolution designating Oct. 8 as First Responders Day in the State of New York. Additionally, Buttenschon co-sponsored a bill establishing the Rural Emergency First Responder Program Revolving Fund to provide grants for emergency responders to participate in training programs (A.5208).
