Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh Announces $702,780 in State Aid for Library Projects in 112th Assembly District

Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C Ballston) announced that two libraries in the 112th Assembly District have been allocated a combined $702,780 in state aid for library construction projects. The funds will greatly assist the Ballston Spa Public Library and the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library in their building endeavors.

Earlier this year, Assemblywoman Walsh granted the Ballston Spa Public Library $40,000 in state bullet aid to help in their capital campaign. The additional $502,474 will further assist the library in the completion of a reading room and local history addition. Serving as the most frequented public center in the Village of Ballston Spa and catering to a community in need, the Ballston Spa Public Library plays a pivotal role. These funds will continue to support the library’s endeavor to modernize and upgrade its facilities.

In Clifton Park, the $200,306 will be utilized to create new functional spaces in the Children’s Library including a mother’s care room, an educational activities area and technology hub. As part of one of the fastest-growing towns in Saratoga County, the Clifton Park library serves a large population of individuals with diverse needs. The renovation of the Children’s Library will further serve this population and ensure even the littlest patrons have the resources they need at the library.

New York’s public libraries are in urgent need of renovation and upgrading. A recent survey showed a documented need for public library construction and renovation projects totaling more than $1.75 billion. More than half of the 1,000-plus public library buildings in communities across New York are more than 60 years old. Another third are more than three decades old. Many of New York’s local public libraries are unable to accommodate users with disabilities, are energy inefficient and cannot provide internet, computer or other electronic technologies to users because of outdated and inadequate electrical wiring. Many do not have sufficient space to house the library’s ever-expanding collection, address the need for adequate meeting spaces or provide for public access computers.

“I’m happy to announce the distribution of these funds to the Ballston Spa and Clifton Park communities, which will serve a diverse population of individuals,” said Walsh.“Libraries are for everyone, and as a library lover myself, I’m excited to see these projects come to fruition.”

“I am confident these improvements will not only meet the current needs of our community but also lay the foundation for continued growth and innovation. By investing in our public spaces, we are investing in the continued growth of our community for generations to come,” Walsh concluded.
