Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C,I,Ref-Ballston) offered her insights today regarding the latest census estimates illustrating New York State’s population decline over the past year. The disturbing trend, which has primarily affected upstate counties, sees the state’s total population decreasing for the first time this decade, with a -4.37 percent net migration loss that ranks highest in the nation.

While Saratoga County, portions of which are located in Assemblywoman Walsh’s district, boasted an encouraging population growth rate of over 3 percent, among the highest statewide, these numbers provide a harrowing look at the consequences of Upstate New York’s recent economic struggles. Like much of the state, Schenectady County, which comprises another portion of Walsh’s district, has seen its population decline over the past year, as residents leave New York State to seek gainful opportunities elsewhere.

Walsh feels strongly that these census estimates illustrate the Legislature’s immediate need to reaffirm its commitment to stimulating fiscal growth across the Empire State.

“As thrilled as I am to see Saratoga County’s promising growth over the past year, the latest census estimates show a clear correlation between New York State’s declining population and recent aggressive tax measures,” said Walsh. “Now more than ever it is crucial for us to stand united as a state in our commitment to ensuring our residents have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive, regardless of where they reside.”

One series of measures Assemblywoman Walsh feels will serve as a powerful resource in retaining New York State’s residents is the STAR Property Tax Relief program; a savings program Gov. Cuomo has recently proposed capping. Walsh remains steadfast in her support of this program, which provides invaluable tax relief to New York State’s homeowners.

Moving forward, Assemblywoman Walsh is committed to exploring any and all options available to reverse this statewide trend, including fighting proposed tax increases and passing legislation, such as ride sharing, to support the creation of full and part-time job opportunities. Walsh also hopes to continue building on the encouraging recent growth seen in the 112th district.
