Walsh Announces Millions in State Aid Awarded to Local Public Libraries

Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C,I-Ballston) announced that Schenectady County Public Library and Galway Public Library will be receiving state aid for library construction funds. Schenectady County Public Library will receive $345,077 that will be used toward a new addition. The Galway Public Library will be awarded $311,804 for exterior and interior construction.

The funds are from $34 million in capital funds for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects provided in the 2018-2019 State Budget, which Walsh voted for.

As the Assembly Minority ranker on the Education Committee and member of the Libraries and Educational Technology Committee, Walsh understands the educational benefits our libraries provide to people of all ages.

“Even with our increasing reliance on technology, libraries are more relevant than ever, and are so much more than books on a shelf. Libraries have always been the 'great equalizer,' allowing people of all means to enjoy the same chance to further their education or to simply lose themselves in a good book," said Walsh. “New York’s public libraries have desperately needed renovation and upgrading. I am proud that two libraries in our district are receiving funding for renovations.”

Walsh participated in the New York Library Association (NYLA) Rally held in the Legislative Office Building during Library Advocacy Day. Every year, NYLA advocates come to Albany to voice their support for funding and policies that benefit libraries. Their ongoing efforts have resulted in over $11 million in additional aid for libraries since 2011. Walsh spoke at the rally in support of the organization and its mission.
