Assemblymember Paula Elaine Kay’s statement on Governor Hochul’s State of the State Address
The hard-working residents of the 100th Assembly District are certainly feeling the impact of sustained inflation and high living costs, and I’m committed to passing measures that make our communities more affordable and support the most vulnerable New Yorkers. I was certainly pleased to see Governor Hochul address affordability head on in her State of the State speech. The expansion of child tax credits and school meals, coupled with middle-class tax cuts, are certainly a start. However, many residents of this District are still saddled with the cost of congestion pricing as they commute into New York City for work.
Public safety is one of my top priorities, and I support the discovery reform outlined in the Governor’s speech that will streamline case processing and reduce unnecessary delays.I was, however, disappointed that the Governor did not include any amendments to bail reform, which was enacted five years ago, and in many cases simply hampers law enforcement’s ability to protect our communities and our streets.
I applaud Governor Hochul’s continued emphasis on increasing our housing stock and ensuring its affordability. We know that many residents of the 100th Assembly District are in dire need of a safe and affordable place to live.I look forward to collaborating with Governor Hochul and my colleagues in both the Assembly and the Senate to make these priorities a reality.
