Assemblyman Philip Ramos (D-Central Islip) congratulated Richard Iannuzzi on his new role as New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) president and said he looks forward to working with him to improve Suffolk County schools.

"I am proud to have one of our local teachers elected to this position," Ramos said. "This is a great opportunity to work with someone who’s had hands-on experience and understands the needs of our schools and our students."

Central Islip teacher Richard Iannuzzi took the helm of the 525,000-member NYSUT, after a dedicated 34-year teaching career and long experience as a union activist. Mr. Iannuzzi was elected to NYSUT’s board of directors in 1998 and was its vice president since June 2004. He was previously president of the Central Islip Teachers Association.

"Mr. Iannuzzi has demonstrated a strong commitment to providing our children with the resources they need and the quality education they deserve." Ramos said. "He has dedicated years of service to Central Islip schools and to all the students here in Suffolk County. NYSUT members have recognized that skill and dedication by electing him president."

"Mr. Iannuzzi’s rise to the top NYSUT post is a testament to the hardworking, dedicated teachers, students and residents here in Suffolk County," Assemblyman Ramos said. "Locally, he has continually fought to get the needed funding and resources for his students and his schools. I look forward to working with him to ensure Suffolk County schools get the aid and education they need, along with smaller class sizes, adequate resources and a safe environment. Together we can fight to make Suffolk County schools a better place for both students and educators."
