Assemblyman Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip) announced the Assembly has reached an agreement on an on-time 2012-13 state budget that includes increased funding for education at a time when many local municipalities are struggling (A.9057-D).

“These tough economic times have made budget negotiations difficult, but I fought to make sure our children received the support they deserve,” Assemblyman Ramos said. “This money will go to help Suffolk schools balance costs without burdening our hardworking families with additional taxes.”

Local School aid and percent increased:

• Bay Shore Union Free School District: $1,374,102 or 4.51%
• Brentwood Union Free School District: $7,654,817 or 4.1%
• Central Islip Union Free School District: $2,025,600 or 2.73%
• East Islip Union Free School District: $1,101,746 or 4.04%
• Hauppauge Union Free School District: $403,773 or 4.69%
• Islip Union Free School District: $506,700 or 3.48%

Compared to last year’s budget, general support for public schools increased by $805 million and funding increased $751 million. The legislature reallocated $200 million from the proposed competitive grants to foundation aid, ensuring all districts are eligible for the funding.

“Adequate state funding means a better education for the students of Suffolk County,” Assemblyman Ramos said. “When it comes to the future success of Suffolk County, there is no substitute for a high-quality education for our young people.”
