Assemblyman Ramos to Host Town Hall Meeting on DREAM Act

Assemblyman Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip) is hosting a town hall meeting on May 12 regarding the “DREAM Act”, legislation he sponsored that would establish a commission to raise money for scholarships awarded to college-bound children of immigrants.

The event is aimed at informing Suffolk County families about the provisions of the DREAM Act (A.8689-A) and highlighting the importance of making higher education a universally attainable goal.

“Many who have immigrated to our country did so in search of a better life for themselves and their families,” Assemblyman Ramos said. “By creating a scholarship fund for the children of immigrants, we can ensure that kids across New York State have a fair shot at achieving the American Dream.”

The legislation this event is centered around would create a DREAM fund commission to raise scholarship money, determine criteria for recipients, create and publicize a training program for education professionals and develop a public awareness campaign for DREAM fund awards.

The event, which will be co-hosted by Assemblyman Francisco Moya, will be held Saturday, May 12, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brentwood Library, located at 34 Second Ave. in Brentwood.

“I encourage local families to join me for this event,” Assemblyman Ramos said. “By working together, we can make the dream of higher education a reality for all of our children.”
