Area Legislators Pay Tribute to Dundee State Wrestling Champion

Senate and Assembly honor Peyton Mullin

Dundee, N.Y., May 30--State Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C-Corning) and Michael Rogers, Director of Community Relations for State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), today visited the Dundee Junior-Senior High School to pay tribute to girls state wrestling champion Peyton Mullin, who earlier this year won her second consecutive state title in the 235-pound weight class at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Girls Invitational State Championship at the MVP Arena in Albany on February 25, 2025.

Mullin’s championship capped an undefeated, 27-0 season.

Palmesano and Rogers visited the Dundee Junior-Senior High School earlier today to join Mullin and her family, school administrators and staff, coaches, and teammates to present an official Legislative Resolution (J1068/K594) sponsored jointly by Palmesano and O’Mara honoring Mullin’s championship.

Mullin, a sophomore, began wrestling at the age of four. Her back-to-back NYSPHSAA championships highlight an outstanding wrestling career that already features numerous accomplishments, including more than 150 total career wins. Mullin is also a two-time New York Wrestling Association for Youth (NYWAY) state champion and a girls Wayne-Finger Lakes League champion, as well as a standout athlete in track and field athlete having previously won a Section V shot put championship.

In a joint statement, O’Mara and Palmesano said, “We always welcome and look forward to these opportunities to pay tribute to dedication, excellence, hard work, and success throughout our school communities. Peyton Mullin continued her remarkable run of state championships this season. She’s an incredible student-athlete who keeps building a dominant wrestling career with her sight set on the Olympics. She stands as a source of deep pride for our entire region. Her incredible success remains a tribute to Peyton’s own determination, hard work, and skill, as well as to the amazing support she receives from her family, coaches, teammates, and the entire Dundee community.”

The joint Senate-Assembly resolution sponsored by O’Mara and Palmesano reads, in part, “Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved only through strenuous practice, team play, and team spirit, nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning. Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical development of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a
standard of healthy living, imparting a desire for success, and developing a sense of fair play and competition.”

Dundee School Superintendent Chris Wood said, “Peyton Mullin exemplifies the epitome of a student-athlete, balancing the soluble of academics with the relentless pursuit of athletic excellence as a two-time state champion in girl’s wrestling and a standout in track. Her discipline, resilience, and intellectual drive distinguish her as a model of perseverance and multifaceted achievement.”

Dundee Athletic Director Scott Shepardson said, “Peyton is a well-rounded athlete who not only excels in wrestling and her other sports but also in the classroom. She is a straight A student who takes a great deal of pride in everything that she does.”
