Although it is important to see specific details when the Governor presents his budget proposal in a couple weeks, I am encouraged that he acknowledged the need to provide tax and regulatory relief to our families, businesses and manufacturers, particularly in our upstate region. It is imperative that we take bold steps to reduce the tax and regulatory burden that continues to hinder private-sector investment and job creation in our upstate economy. Broad tax and regulatory relief is vital if we want to foster an economic climate that will not only bring new businesses here, but also help our current businesses and manufacturers stay and grow here so they can provide good jobs for the people of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions.

While I agree with the governor that we must reduce the crushing property tax burden placed upon our local taxpayers, I am disappointed that he failed to mention the need to address the problem of unfunded mandates, which are the true cost drivers that continue to increase our local municipal and school district budgets and, therefore, local property taxes.

Additionally, while I appreciate the Governor’s focus on education, I was disappointed he did not mention once the need to address the rushed and disastrous implementation of the new Common Core standards and the challenges and problems it has caused for students, parents, teachers and administrators across New York State. In addition, it is imperative that we address the inequity in our school aid formula to help our low- and average-wealth school districts so the children in our upstate, rural schools can compete on a level playing field. This is vital if we want to ensure all of our children receive the good, quality education they deserve so they can be successful in the future.

I look forward to working with the Governor and my colleagues in the Legislature during the upcoming budget and legislative session to make positive changes that will improve the quality of life for our families in New York State.
